Origins and Early Development

FreeCell's roots trace back to earlier solitaire games like "Eight Off" and "Baker's Game." In 1968, Martin Gardner described a version called "Baker's Game" in Scientific American, where cards were built by suit rather than alternating colors. Paul Alfille, a medical student and computer programmer, modified these rules to create FreeCell, introducing alternating color sequences. In 1978, he implemented FreeCell on the PLATO computer system using the TUTOR programming language. This version featured graphical representations and allowed for various game parameters, including different numbers of columns and cells, as well as player statistics and tournaments.

The original Freecell game was invented by Paul Alfille, who developed it from Baker's Game. In 1978, he created the first computer implementation of the game for the PLATO educational computer system at the University of Illinois. Later, Jim Horne implemented this game for Microsoft Windows, which made it extremely popular.

Transition to Personal Computers

In the late 1980s, Jim Horne, a Microsoft programmer, encountered FreeCell on the PLATO system at the University of Alberta. He developed a text-based DOS version in 1988 and later created a graphical version for Windows. This Windows version was included in Microsoft Entertainment Pack Volume 2 in 1991.

Integration into Windows and Popularity

Microsoft included FreeCell in Windows 95, significantly boosting its popularity. The game became a staple in subsequent Windows versions, contributing to its widespread recognition. Microsoft's version featured 32,000 numbered deals, known as the "Microsoft 32,000." All but one of these deals (#11982) have been solved, with the unsolved deal adding to the game's intrigue.

Gameplay:

FreeCell Solitaire is played with a standard 52-card deck and includes four free cells that can be used to temporarily store cards. The objective of the game is to move all cards to the four foundation piles in ascending order from Ace to King, using the free cells as needed.
